YOUSSEF KAMEL

An Egyptian painter and visual artist from the first generation of Egyptian visual artists. He is considered the father of the Egyptian impressionist style and one of the pioneers of the art of painting in Egypt. Upon his return from his government mission in 1959, he worked as a professor of oil painting at the Higher School of Fine Arts in 1929, and was the first Egyptian to teach there alongside European professors. He was then appointed head of the Department of Painting (i.e. color painting), then became director of the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo in 1948 and 1949, then between 1950 and 1953 he became dean of the Royal College of Fine Arts (which became known as the “College of Fine Arts” after the 1952 revolution) and rapporteur of the Fine Arts Committee of the Supreme Council for Arts and Literature. Youssef Kamel adopted the Impressionist school as a method of expression, but he did not literally adhere to the European Impressionist art style that requires not using black or brown in painting, as he made them among his colors and was satisfied with Impressionist art with adjacent touches that are not integrated, each touch is independent next to the other and the viewer’s eye blends them when looking at the painting from a distance. Youssef Kamel was one of the most prolific Egyptian artists; as the number of paintings he painted reached more than two thousand paintings, the subjects of which were from the Egyptian environment, the Egyptian countryside, and the old markets and neighborhoods of Cairo. He was fond of painting birds and domestic animals. His creations are preserved in the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo. Among his most important works are (Painting of the Old Neighborhoods – A Picture of the Sheikhs of Hussein – On the Bank of the Canal – Color Effects)
