YOUSSEF FRANSIS

1934 – 2001

Born in Cairo on June 6, 1934 , he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in the

Photography Department from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Helwan University in 1957, then two years of postgraduate studies at Luxor Ceremonies, a diploma from the Higher Institute of Cinema, then postgraduate studies in the Directing Department in 1970. He has many publications in various fields. 

At the beginning of his career, he worked as a cartoonist for Rose Al-Youssef magazine in 1958 for a year, then turned to screenwriting in 1965 and joined Al-Ahram newspaper in 1964, where he continued working until he reached the position of advisor to the editor-in-chief. In 1987, he was appointed director of the Egyptian Cultural Center in Paris. 

His first film was The Impossible in 1965, co-starring Mustafa Mahmoud . Among his films were My Father on the Tree in 1969, co-starring Ihsan Abdel Quddous and Saad El-Din Wahba , and The Thin Thread in 1971.  Among his most important television works were the films “Tutankhamun” and “Who is My Love?” 

He married journalist Mona Siraj , deputy editor-in-chief of Akhbar Al-Nas magazine, and had two sons
