Abdel Aziz Darweesh

1918-1981
A pioneer of Expressionism art in Egypt.
Darweesh received his Ph.D. from “The San Fernando Academy” in 1952. He held the position of head of the painting department at the Faculty of Beaux Arts in 1969 and received a special appreciation medal and the title of Bakuya from the King of Morocco, Mohammed V in 1952.
He was assigned to teach in Cairo University, Ain Shams University, the Faculty of Fine Arts in Alexandria and the Leonardo da Vinci Institute in Cairo. After 1976, Darweesh was delegated to work in Yemen to prepare a generation of artists and founded the Faculties of Fine Arts in Yemen and Syria.

His artistic paintings are displayed in many art museums, including eleven paintings in “The Museum of Modern Art” in Cairo, eight paintings in “The Mustafa Kamel Museum” and a painting at “The Immortals Museum” in Washington. His work can also be found in the Yemeni Ministry of Culture, and in Syria.
One of the artist’s most distinguished achievements, in which he excelled, was mural art. Three gigantic murals stand in proof of that, the first being in Port Said; a 7.23m painting of the railway station which reveals the enormity of his capabilities. The second, a 3.23m mural on the walls of the court complex in the early sixties on crime and punishment since the beginning of creation. It also reveals, in its expressive areas, his intellectual ability in choosing the subject and the proposed form. His third mural, spread over an area of 2.6m, can be found at “The Food Stuff Corporation”.
Darweesh passed away on 7/16/1981 after teaching a generation of artists. His legacy was passed on through his daughter, artist Farida Darweesh.
